This is a 12-month placement for an Undergraduate Defence Solutions Product Safety Engineer.
Role Description
Supporting safety engineering teams, you will develop a unique mindset focused not on how a system works, but on how it can fail and whether that failure could result in harm to people. This involves conducting detailed safety assessments of engineering designs using techniques like Hazard Identification, Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis and Event Tree Analysis. You will gain an in-depth understanding of engineering designs and the development process. You will also develop a questioning approach to understand how the operation and maintenance of products could create safety risks, their potential consequences, likelihood of occurrence and the effectiveness of existing safety measures.
Core Duties
- Support safety engineering teams in conducting safety analysis that informs the design of safe products.
- Support the process of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, including the management and administration of risk registers and hazard logs.
- Review areas of Regulation and Legislation that pertains to a particular product type so requirements are identified and can be factored into the design and operational use of products.
- Review safety of procured commercial off the shelf items ahead of integration into the parent equipment or system, interrogating data sheets and using on line research.
