About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, commencing at the start of July 2027. You will develop your skills and knowledge, gaining the most value possible from your experience.

You will have the opportunity to network with other Industrial Placement students across the Met Office and understand potential career paths after graduation.

The Work

The Met Office is developing the next generation of its weather and climate modelling capability. LFRic provides software infrastructure for next-generation models and is designed to support efficient execution on emerging supercomputing architectures. Regional modelling is an important part of this transition, requiring infrastructure capable of taking information from global LFRic simulations and using it to initialise and drive high-resolution limited-area models.

The regional LFRic work already covers several tasks, including adapting data to different levels of detail, representing regional areas and terrain, converting weather information and creating the files needed to start and run a regional forecast. Some of this software is already in place, while other parts still need to be developed or brought together.

Key Duties

  • Contribute to the development and testing of regional LFRic modelling infrastructure.
  • Work alongside Met Office scientists and software engineers to deliver a self-contained project within our regional modelling infrastructure.

Skills and Experience

  • An interest in applying software engineering to scientific or numerical problems, particularly large-scale simulation or modelling.
  • Experience of programming in at least one language, gained through university coursework, personal projects, employment or other practical experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a technical team, including discussing ideas, asking questions and responding constructively to feedback.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical ideas clearly to colleagues with different areas of expertise.
  • Ability to organise and manage your own work, seek guidance when appropriate, and make progress on a defined technical project.

What You'll Get

  • Salary: £27,170
  • Annual Leave: starting at 27.5 days
  • Access to discounted shopping, inclusive of retail, leisure and lifestyle brands.

Working Pattern

  • Full time, 37 hours per week.

  • As an Industrial Placement, attendance in the office once a week is expected.

Important Information

  • This is a temporary position until July 2028.
  • There may be an opportunity to apply for our Graduate Development scheme upon completion of your university studies, subject to availability and a successful application.
  • You must be eligible to live and work in the UK.
