TL;DR
Key Takeaways
- Gain hands-on experience in systems engineering on cutting-edge Electronic Warfare (EW) technology.
- Work alongside experienced engineers on projects for RAF, Army, and future aircraft.
- Develop practical engineering design and development skills.
- Must be studying for a relevant degree and have a good understanding of mathematics and electronics.
About the Role
Luton is home to around 1,000 people involved in the design and development of Leonardo’s Electronic Warfare (EW) capability, protecting airborne platforms from RF-based threats. This includes:
- Protection systems for current and future RAF and Army aircraft (Typhoon and Apache).
- Technology development platforms for the UK’s Team Tempest, supporting the development of a new 6th generation aircraft within the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
- Concept demonstrators for future Electronic Warfare technologies and systems.
- Air Platform Protection systems for export customer aircraft.
- Technology to derive insights from vast data collected by electronic surveillance systems using AI and machine learning.
Role Description
As an Industrial Placement Systems Engineer, you will work alongside talented engineers, supporting the development of world-leading technologies and capabilities across multiple Avionic Systems and Platforms. You will be involved in different phases of the systems engineering lifecycle, from understanding customer requirements and developing system architectures to integration and testing of equipment and systems.
Key Responsibilities
Working within an established systems engineering community and supported by experienced engineers, you will:
- Develop practical skills in engineering design and development for complex systems, understanding key processes and technologies.
- Gain an understanding of the EW domain to support product and technology development.
- Collaborate closely with engineers across multiple disciplines to solve problems.
- Complete tasks to a high standard in accordance with appropriate processes and procedures.
- Apply academic skills to solve problems, generate ideas, and be proactive within the team.
What We Need From You
Qualifications
- Currently studying for a degree in a relevant discipline: aerospace/aeronautical engineering, computer science/systems, electrical/electronic engineering, general engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, and systems engineering.
- Understanding of mathematics to at least A-Level standard.
- Basic understanding of electronics.
- Ideally, experience working with engineering development tools (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, Rhapsody, Cameo, DOORS).
