About the Role

We’re looking for talented and motivated students to join our Highways and Streets team on an Industrial Placement, where you’ll gain hands-on experience, contribute to real projects, and develop technical skills that will kick-start your career.

As part of AECOM’s Transportation business line, you’ll work alongside experienced highways and traffic engineers, transport planners, and technical specialists to help develop solutions that improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of transport networks.

Our work covers a wide range of highways and traffic engineering projects, from major road schemes, junction and network assessments to traffic modelling, signal design, road safety, and the development of sustainable transport solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to work on projects for local authorities, National Highways, developers, and other public and private sector clients.

What you’ll do

Your placement will provide exposure to a variety of highways and traffic engineering activities, which may include:

  • Supporting the design and assessment of junctions, roundabouts, traffic signals, and urban road networks.
  • Assisting with traffic modelling, microsimulation, and network analysis using industry-standard software such as Junctions, LinSig, and VISSIM.
  • Assist with the preparation of highway design drawings, plans, details, and supporting technical documentation using CAD and design software.
  • Support the preparation and development of highway layouts in accordance with relevant design standards, guidance, and specifications.
  • Supporting traffic impact assessments, transport assessments, feasibility studies, and scheme appraisals.
  • Collecting, analysing, and interpreting traffic flow, speed, journey time, and other transport data to inform engineering decisions.
  • Assist with site visits, surveys, and the collection of information to support highway design and assessment.
  • Assisting with the development and assessment of traffic management and network improvement schemes.
  • Supporting the preparation and assessment of traffic signal layouts and junction improvement proposals.
  • Contributing to road safety assessments and audits, helping to identify potential issues and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Supporting the development of active travel and sustainable transport schemes, considering the interaction between pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and general traffic.
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, drawings, calculations, presentations, and other project documentation.
  • Developing an understanding of relevant traffic engineering standards, guidance, legislation, and industry best practice.
  • Attending site visits and traffic surveys to understand existing conditions and collect information to support project development.
  • Working collaboratively with traffic engineers, highway engineers, transport planners, technicians, and other disciplines to deliver high-quality solutions for clients.
  • Contributing to project meetings and developing an understanding of how technical recommendations are communicated to clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

We’re looking for students who can demonstrate the following:

  • Currently studying towards a degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation/Traffic Engineering, Highway Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Genuine interest in highway/traffic engineering, transport planning, and the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable transport networks.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and numerical skills, with the ability to interpret and evaluate technical information and data.
  • An interest in traffic modelling, junction design, network analysis, and transport data analysis.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail, with good research, technical writing, and report-writing skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, while demonstrating initiative when working independently.
  • A self-motivated and enthusiastic approach, with a willingness to learn new software, tools, and technical methodologies.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development throughout the placement.
  • A practical, adaptable, and solutions-focused approach to technical challenges.
