About the Role

TfL Engineering - Highways & Traffic Graduate Scheme

This two-year development programme offers a mixture of office, site, and hybrid working. You will gain vast knowledge in a range of engineering areas associated with the highway and contribute to improvements that make a real difference to London.

What you will be doing:

The programme consists of up to five placement rotations, designed to equip you with a range of skills and experience:

  • Placement 1 – Traffic Engineering (6-9 months): Developing new junction layouts, designing cycle routes, and reviewing traffic survey data.
  • Placement 2 – Highway Engineering (approx. 6 months): Developing investigation strategies, pavement design, and technical assessment of third-party proposals.
  • Placement 3 – Traffic Control Engineering (6-9 months): Designing and upgrading traffic signals, commissioning signals, and writing specifications.
  • Placement 4 – Road Safety (approx. 1 month): Undertaking collision analysis, designing road safety improvements, and supporting road safety audits.
  • Placement 5 – Arboriculture & Landscape (approx. 1 month): Learning about green infrastructure, auditing tree surveys, and managing the tree planting programme.

Placement lengths are flexible and can be tailored to individual career aspirations, but all are compulsory to ensure varied experience.

Training and Support:

You will receive support for your technical development through on-the-job experience and placements. Professional development will be supported through classroom and online training, mentoring, and networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one guidance from a placement manager, scheme sponsor, buddy, and development adviser.

Career Progression:

Upon completion, you can obtain professional membership of a relevant institution and work towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. This can lead to roles such as Senior Engineer or leadership positions managing teams and making strategic decisions.

What we look for:

  • Ambition with an inquisitive mind
  • Relish a challenge and driven to succeed
  • Thrive as part of a diverse team and motivated to add value
  • Passion for engineering and a desire to develop in the industry
