Key Takeaways
- Gain experience in Rail Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance on live projects.
- Work across various engineering disciplines within the rail sector.
- Requires a 2:1 in a relevant engineering or technical degree.
- Hybrid work options available.
About the Role
AECOM is seeking collaborative, technically curious graduates for its Graduate Rail Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance (SESA) programme.
What is SESA?
Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance (SESA) integrates systems thinking, integration, and assurance to ensure complex railway systems are clearly defined, effectively integrated, verified, validated, and supported by appropriate engineering and assurance evidence.
Your Role
As a graduate within SESA, you will work across the engineering lifecycle alongside disciplines such as signalling, telecommunications, rolling stock, track, civils, stations, power, operations, and maintenance. You will initially work under the guidance of experienced engineers and progressively take ownership of defined technical activities and work packages as your capability develops.
Responsibilities
Selected candidates will be enrolled on the Graduate Development Programme and may:
- Support Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, and Systems Assurance activities on live rail and infrastructure projects.
- Contribute to system definitions, including boundaries, functions, interfaces, assumptions, and operational context.
- Support requirements management, including capture, review, allocation, traceability, change, and compliance.
- Assist with systems integration and interface management, identifying and resolving multidisciplinary technical issues.
- Contribute to verification and validation (V&V) planning, evidence development, and technical reviews.
- Support the preparation of Systems Engineering plans, integration strategies, assurance reports, compliance records, and other technical documentation.
- Contribute to systems safety and risk activities, including hazard identification, management, and risk assessment.
- Collaborate with engineering disciplines, clients, and operational stakeholders.
- Develop an understanding of railway standards, engineering processes, and regulatory requirements.
- Apply whole-system and whole-life thinking, considering interactions between requirements, interfaces, safety, reliability, operations, maintenance, and verification.
- Utilise requirements-management, digital engineering, modelling, and data-analysis tools.
- Progressively take responsibility for defined technical tasks and work packages.
Through project experience, mentoring, and training, you will develop capability across Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, Systems Safety, and Assurance, with opportunities to specialise as your career develops.
Qualifications
- BEng, BSc, or MEng in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, Project Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline with a 2:1 (or equivalent).
- A genuine interest in rail systems, complex infrastructure, and multidisciplinary engineering.
- Analytical, curious, and interested in understanding how different parts of a system interact.
- Clear communication and effective teamwork within multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated initiative, professionalism, willingness to learn, and constructive challenge.
Applicants from Project Management or related backgrounds are welcomed if they can demonstrate a strong interest in engineering, systems integration, and complex technical projects, along with the aptitude and willingness to develop technical Systems Engineering and assurance capability.
Additional Information
- Applications are encouraged as early as possible due to rolling recruitment.
- Include a covering letter, all predicted/obtained academic grades, and your availability dates and preferred locations.
- You must have the right to work in the UK.
- Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office is required.
