Key Takeaways

  • Gain experience in Rail Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance on live projects.
  • Work across various engineering disciplines within a Graduate Development Programme.
  • Requires a 2:1 degree in a relevant engineering, science, or project management discipline.
  • Hybrid working options available.
  • Must have the right to work in the UK.

About the Role

AECOM is seeking collaborative, technically curious graduates for its Graduate Development Programme in Rail Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance (SESA).

SESA focuses on systems thinking, integration, and assurance to ensure complex railway systems are clearly defined, effectively integrated, verified, validated, and supported by evidence.

What You'll Do

As a graduate in SESA, you will work across the engineering lifecycle alongside disciplines such as signalling, telecommunications, rolling stock, track, civils, stations, power, operations, and maintenance. You will initially be guided by experienced engineers and progressively take ownership of technical activities and work packages.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, and Systems Assurance on live rail and infrastructure projects.
  • Contributing to system definitions, including boundaries, functions, interfaces, assumptions, and operational context.
  • Assisting with requirements management (capture, review, allocation, traceability, change, compliance).
  • Supporting systems integration and interface management, identifying and resolving multidisciplinary technical issues.
  • Contributing to verification and validation (V&V) planning, evidence development, and technical reviews.
  • Helping prepare Systems Engineering plans, integration strategies, assurance reports, compliance records, and other technical documentation.
  • Contributing to systems safety and risk activities, including hazard identification, management, and risk assessment.
  • Collaborating with engineering disciplines, clients, and operational stakeholders.
  • Developing an understanding of railway standards, engineering processes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Applying whole-system and whole-life thinking, considering interactions between requirements, interfaces, safety, reliability, operations, maintenance, and verification.
  • Utilising requirements-management, digital engineering, modelling, and data-analysis tools.
  • Taking progressive responsibility for defined technical tasks and work packages.

Through project experience, mentoring, and training, you will build capability in Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, Systems Safety, and Assurance, with opportunities for specialization.

Qualifications

  • BEng, BSc, or MEng in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, Project Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline with a 2:1 (or equivalent).
  • A genuine interest in rail systems, complex infrastructure, and multidisciplinary engineering.
  • Analytical, curious, and interested in understanding system interactions.
  • Clear communication and effective teamwork skills within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated initiative, professionalism, willingness to learn, and constructive challenge.

Applicants with Project Management or related backgrounds are welcome if they can demonstrate a strong interest in engineering, systems integration, and complex technical projects, along with the aptitude and willingness to develop technical Systems Engineering and assurance capability.

Application Information

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.
  • Include a covering letter with your application.
  • Provide all predicted and/or obtained academic grades.
  • Specify your available work dates and preferred locations.
  • You must have the right to work in the UK.
  • An in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office is required.
