About the Role

Building Physics is a specialist team within AECOM's building engineering business line. Our Building Physics engineers support our building engineering and sustainability teams and carry out independent consultancy for a range of clients.

Our team delivers a broad range of building performance and sustainability services, including:

  • Dynamic Thermal Modelling (DTM), including plant sizing assessments and compliance with Part O Overheating Regulations and Part L2 Building Regulations.
  • LEED and ASHRAE energy modelling.
  • NABERS UK Design for Performance schemes.
  • TM54 operational energy assessments.
  • Passive design analysis.
  • Daylight modelling.
  • Thermal comfort and ventilation analysis.
  • Low and zero carbon technology feasibility studies.
  • Support for the development of mixed-use masterplans.

Examples of projects the Building Physics team are involved in include:

  • Broadway - Dynamic Thermal Modelling (DTM); Planning for site, Part L Building Regulation compliance, domestic and non-domestic, Overheating of apartments, sizing, energy analysis.
  • Southwark Development - DTM, Greater London Authority (GLA) Planning for site, Part L Building Regulation compliance, Part O Overheating assessments, domestic and non-domestic, TM54 Operational Energy assessments and BREEAM Passive Design Assessment.
  • Wood Wharf Phase 1 & 2 - DTM, condensation and U-value calculations, basement thermal strategy, Part L Building Regulation compliance.
  • Liverpool Street Station – DTM, GLA Planning for site for an over station development and for refurbishing the existing station and a GLA Operational Energy assessments on both buildings.

Job Responsibilities

As a graduate, you will be paired with an experienced modeller for guidance and mentorship on live projects. You will receive training on our software modelling tool, IES-VE, and participate in AECOM's comprehensive graduate training program, which covers areas such as communication, report writing, client presentations, and financial management.

Your initial responsibilities will include:

  • Producing 3D geometry for buildings and developments.
  • Liaising with internal and external design teams.
  • Assisting in setting up dynamic thermal models of proposed developments.
  • Attending meetings and workshops with Architects, developers, and contractors.
  • Undertaking simple test cell modelling.
  • Collating evidence for Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).
  • Performing calculations in supporting software packages.
  • Assisting in producing supporting information for central databases.
  • Understanding and undertaking energy calculations.
  • Supporting engineers in producing information for reports.
  • Assisting in the production of marketing material.
  • Supporting senior staff in project delivery.

As you develop, you will take on more responsibility in managing projects from inception to completion. You will have regular meetings with your line manager to discuss progress, interests, and future development.
