About the Role

About GE Aerospace

GE Aerospace is advancing aviation technologies for today and tomorrow. Your work will contribute to the production of advanced jet engines, components, and integrated systems that power commercial and military aircraft. You’ll be part of a team that embraces your drive, curiosity, and unique ideas and perspectives, sharing in pride and purpose that affects the lives of millions around the world.

Engineering

Engineering is at the centre of what GE Aerospace does. This role is for talented, innovative engineers who can help design and develop products for today, tomorrow, and in the future.

Roles and Responsibilities

In this 12-month Software Engineering Placement, you will gain invaluable skills by working as part of a team during part of (or multiple parts) the Development Life Cycle. Depending on your skillset and role requirements, you will develop your programming languages skills in (but not limited to) Java, C, C++, C#, Python, Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino.

You could be:

  • Analyzing requirements
  • Designing an application
  • Defining a test specification
  • Supporting configuration management, database development and system monitoring
  • Engaging with internal and external customers and third-party vendors

Specific Team Focus Areas:

  • On Wing Technology (Bristol): Developing intuitive, responsive user interfaces for aerospace applications using modern web technologies. You will design and implement user-facing features with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, working closely with UI/UX designers to turn wireframes into high-quality code and ensure designs are technically feasible. The role involves collaborating with back-end developers to integrate front-end components, participating in agile practices (sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives), engaging in code reviews and best practices, troubleshooting and resolving issues, and staying current with emerging software development trends and technologies.
  • Software Engineering (Cheltenham): Use good engineering practice and AI tools to improve project outcomes across Quality, Delivery, and Cost. You will strengthen code quality by following agreed coding standards, actively participating in code reviews, and suggesting maintainability improvements that help reduce long-term cost. You will contribute to continuous improvement by engaging in team retrospectives and capturing changes that lower defects and delays, improving both Quality and Delivery. You will build systems thinking by joining cross-team projects, learning how upstream and downstream changes affect Delivery, Quality, and Cost. You will explore and share advances in tools, frameworks, and AI for engineering, focusing on options that improve Quality, accelerate Delivery, and reduce Cost. You will use AI-assisted tools to generate and refine test ideas and documentation, validating outputs to improve Quality while reducing Cost and effort. You will also apply AI to summarise technical articles and documentation for the team, helping spread knowledge quickly and efficiently, supporting Quality and Delivery at low Cost.
  • Software Tools (Cheltenham): Maintain, support, and improve the engineering toolchains used across NPI projects. You will be supported by experienced engineers and a strong learning and continuous improvement culture as you learn the toolchains, contribute to support and enhancement work, and develop through hands-on projects, mentorship, and training. Key responsibilities include optimising day-to-day use of engineering tools (issue triage, root cause analysis, resolution), implementing and testing enhancements to improve usability, reliability, and performance, and translating stakeholder requests into requirements, design changes, implementation, and verification. You will document configurations, changes, known issues, and test evidence according to engineering policies, prepare and present technical findings and status updates, participate in cross-functional initiatives and continuous improvement activities, and provide timely updates on risks, issues, and progress to support short-term planning and unblock delivery.
  • Test Systems (Cheltenham): You will train to be safe in Lab and Production areas, learn full software development lifecycle processes and adhere to them. Track and deliver software releases on time & identify improvements to projects.
  • Engineering Operations Power portfolio (Cheltenham): Provide support across digital transformation activities, helping to drive automation, simplification, and optimisation of business processes. Working with the Business Change Manager, you will help run an effective operating rhythm by preparing reports and dashboards, managing digital reporting tools, dashboards, and web apps, and supporting the implementation of new digital tools. You will track and administer digital transformation projects and other improvement activities, document business data sources, and contribute to defining a future data analytics strategy for Engineering Operations. The role also involves engaging cross-functionally, facilitating process reviews and improvements, and building strong relationships across the organisation.

You will be guided by structured goals and objectives and will have responsibility to deliver on inspiring projects supported by your People Leader and team around you. You will be coached and mentored, and provided with the opportunity to connect with other placement students across the UK.
