Job Overview

TfL's vision is to be a strong, green heartbeat for London. This scheme focuses on delivering TfL’s Sustainability Strategy and Corporate Environment Plan, tackling climate and ecological emergencies across various themes.

Engineers will be central to modernising and upgrading TfL's systems and delivering sustainability transformations. You will work in multi-disciplinary teams across TfL, with customers, local government, suppliers, consultants, and contractors.

What will I be doing?

Your graduate programme will consist of placements (3-6 months each) across TfL and the Engineering & Asset Strategy Directorate. The aim is to equip you with skills for a successful engineering career, including experience in maintenance and operations teams.

You will have the opportunity to shape your placements, working with a scheme sponsor, chartership mentor, and development advisor. Placements can also be arranged outside of Engineering (e.g., Project Sponsorship, Safety Health and Environment Office) and externally (e.g., Department for Transport, Contractors).

The ultimate goal is to gain the skills and experience required to become a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist.

Institution Alignment Options:

  • IET: Focus on systems, electrical, electronic, communication, or control systems engineering. Placements may involve systems engineering for Major Projects, electric bus charging infrastructure, signalling strategy, and power network upgrades.
  • IMechE: Focus on mechanical engineering and materials. Placements could include investigating ground source heat, the Building Decarbonisation programme, heating & cooling technical strategies, and trials of low carbon construction materials.
  • ICE: Focus on civil and structural engineering. Placements may involve Whole Life Carbon Management Plans, climate change risk assessment, nature-based solutions, optimising structural design for low carbon emissions, and developing environment management tools.

What qualifications will I gain?

You will be set on the path to becoming a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist. You will also have access to various online and in-person training courses.

Training and Support

  • On-the-job practical experience from placements.
  • Classroom-led and online training courses.
  • Mentoring and structured networking opportunities.
  • One-to-one guidance from a Placement Manager, Scheme Sponsor, Chartership Mentor, Buddy, and Development Adviser.

What we look for

Candidates who are:

  • Caring about colleagues, customers, and work.
  • Open to new ideas and collaboration.
  • Adaptable and willing to innovate.

Application Process

The application process has 5 steps, including online assessments that must be completed within a time frame. Pay close attention to emails and deadlines; online assessments typically have a 1-week completion window.

Assessment centres will take place from November to January. TfL cannot guarantee alternative dates.
