Scheme Placement Details
- Duration: Five years.
- Mobility: Full mobility within the UK and overseas is mandatory.
- Year 1 & 2: UK-based placements at either London or East Kilbride headquarters. Roles may involve desk officer positions for specific countries or thematic issues (e.g., human rights, counter-terrorism). Second-year placements deepen experience in different areas, potentially including Ministerial Private Office or Consular directorates. China Pathway participants may focus on China-related priorities.
- Years 3-5: Typically an overseas placement, though some may remain UK-based. Deployment depends on readiness assessment. The FCDO has over 280 global offices. You must be willing and able to serve wherever the FCDO has a presence. Full-time language training may be required before an overseas role. Overseas experience significantly strengthens long-term career prospects.
