This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, commencing at the start of July 2027. You will develop your skills and knowledge and ensure you gain the most value possible from your experience with us.

About the Placement

We’re looking for an Agentic AI for Weather and Climate Model Development Industrial Placement to help us make a difference to our planet.

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, with a minimum of one day per week in the office. The advertised location will be your contractual place of work.

This is a full-time role, 37 hours per week.

Our next-generation weather and climate modelling systems increasingly combine physically-based numerical models with data-driven machine learning approaches, creating exciting opportunities for hybrid modelling techniques.

Exciting advances are being made in the use of Agentic AI tools to accelerate scientific discovery and software development. Working with members of our Dynamics Research team, you will investigate how Agentic AI can be used to develop, train and evaluate hybrid physical-machine learning models, delivering a prototype capability based on our existing modelling frameworks.

Your Key Duties

• Develop a prototype hybrid physical-machine learning model
• Use the Agentic AI to assist with training, testing and evaluating the integrated model
• Work with experts to help ensure the AI developments are robust and quality assured.

Essential Criteria, Skills and Experience

• Lead Criteria: Studying for a degree in a mathematical or physical science, with an industrial placement year included.
• Experience with programming or scientific computing tools such as Fortran, Python, or MATLAB.
• A clear interest in AI and machine learning, with a motivation to build skills in this area.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently on scientific challenges.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate scientific and/or technical concepts to a broad range of audiences.
• Evidence of working effectively with others as part of a team, demonstrating a collaborative approach to successfully deliver common goals.
