About the Role

About the Apprenticeship

This Aerospace Transmissions Fitter apprenticeship is suited for those who are interested in the practical (hands-on) elements of engineering.

Over the 4-year programme you will be trained to become a Mechanical Fitter specialising in Transmissions equipment. You will build, repair, and test aircraft transmissions parts and systems in maintenance and test facilities. The ultimate aim is to place you in a final role based on business requirements and the skills displayed during the apprenticeship.

You will experience a number of placements across the Transmissions Centre of Excellence. The apprenticeship will start with an induction into Leonardo, followed by a Yeovil College induction. You will combine your time between Yeovil College and work placements at Leonardo Helicopters, increasing your work placements as you move through the years.

Each apprentice will complete an End Point Assessment as defined in the Apprenticeship Standard in the final months of the programme.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will be placed in some or all of the following departmental areas within the Transmissions Centre of Excellence:

  • Transmissions Fitting: Covers the build and test of aircraft gearboxes (Main, Intermediate, and tail gearboxes) both new build and in-service gearboxes.
  • New Build: Learn and evaluate potential improvements within the business.
  • Repair and Overhaul: Maintain in-service gearboxes, which will be stripped and surveyed on receipt.
